I've been running a personal and business website for myself and wife for over 20 years. Tried a number of providers and switched to Linode about 3 years ago. Best price and stability than prior providers I've used.
I'm using a Nanode as all my sites are low volume. If you are comfortable with Linux administration its a good deal.
I looked for a vps provider to experiment, primarily host a vpn server and other stuff like pihole, maybe cut cost a bit. Linode seemed ok and reviews were ok. What isn't ok is to not inform that if you use a vpn to register, your account can be flagged as "suspicions" hence you have to re-register (convinient!). second issue is restricted ports to fight spammers, isn't a problem for me but you have to say about it before user put his credentials into your form, it's a honorable fight but if they inform about it post-facturm I can imagine they can easily hide something else.
Too much hassle, I better stick with what I have rn. Score is just price/feature comparison with what I use, can't say anything about reliability and such ofc
You would have thought the back up is something they will prompt you to choose, but it isn't. I've using it for 8 years, under the assumption that it should have been backed up until it wasn't. The support team is almost useless as they expect you to DIY everything. I can get security, backup and much better support easily at BlueHost or somewhere else.
We're sorry to hear that your experience with us was less than stellar and we'd like to address some of the issues that you've brought up.
Since Backups are a paid service, Linode doesn't automatically add them. However, they are available as an option that you can choose to enable during the creation of a new Linode, or add to an existing Linode. You also have the option to enable them account-wide, so that the service is added to any new Linodes that are created on your account.
As for the DIY aspect of our service, we try to be as hands-off as we can so that customers have the freedom to configure their Linodes in the way that they want.
Our Support team is available 24/7 by phone or email to help as much as we can with the issues you encounter. We also have our Community Questions site which allows our users to get assistance from the Linode Community (staff and other users) who may have experienced similar issues to what you're looking for help with: www.linode.com/support.
Solid, human-scale VPS service with excellent tech support
I've used Linode for about twelve years now for hosting personal email and websites, and about nine years for hosting email, website, and file backup (SVN) for a business that's had between one and three people. There's various businesses I've used to support my small business, but Linode has been one of my favorites for two reasons: (1) they only change in *good* ways; and (2) the tech support is always knowledgeable.
On point (1), a lot of other businesses (payment processors, co-working spaces, etc.) seem to change over time in bad ways. They go out of business, pivot their business model to something more profitable than what I was using them for, increase their rates, the service quality drops . . . it's always something. With Linode, it's just been . . . stability. The only "we're making changes" notifications I get are ones to tell me they've added disk space, memory, the ability to add block storage, or some other nice thing. I always just feel like they are trying to be a better service for existing customers, rather than trying to squeeze more dollars out of them.
On point (2), as an example (and the thing that motivated me to write this review out of gratitude), I recently and suddenly was finding that all of my work emails sent to G suite users were going into their spam folder. Not mailing list bulk emails, but even replies. I read every solution on Stack Exchange I could find, made some changes, but no dice. This is kind of an emergency, because it's hard to operate a business that way. Google just has a form that you can fill out and the response is "we'll look into it, any changes may take two weeks to propogate". Two weeks! I contacted Linode tech support, who looked over my DNS config and noticed it was probably the lack of IPv6 PTR record -- I had IPv4 PTR set up, but hadn't thought of IPv6. Setting up the IPv6 PTR didn't work immediately, but turning off IPv6 for my mailserver did, and all better (presumably the IPv6 PTR record will propagate eventually and I can turn it back on). So that's the sort of top-tier tech support one wants to have.
In ten years of hosting the only downtime or Linode-side tech issue I was aware of was a half-hour DDoS outage a few years ago. The online server-management tools have all been fine and easy enough to use.
Don't ever change, Linode. (Except for the free upgrades).
Seriously? I wasted my time setting up the server only to find out that Linode wouldn't provide me with a third Ipv4. Here is their answer:
"Due to the global shortage of IPv4 addresses, this would not be an acceptable justification for an additional IP address for your Linode. Along with this, I would like to point out that having your nameservers on the same linode that serves your content will create a single point of failure, which I wouldn't recommend."
Not acceptable? They have to approve if I need it or not? Do they know my business' needs more than I do? That my go well in China where you have to get permission to take a shit. Plain BS. Digital Ocean provides the IPv4 without any questions.
This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You don't need 3 IPv4 addresses on a single host. And given that they can't get more allocations because IPv4 allocs are exhausted, yes, they need to approve your request, and rightly so. You're not their only customer. Pure selfishness on your part.
Bom...
Linode is a privately owned virtual private server provider based in Galloway, New Jersey. It’s a portmanteau of the words Linux and node, essentially connected to the services the company provides – cloud computing and Linux servers.
