Unlike many hosting firms, Lapsum doesn’t list terms like “99.9% Uptime” in a flashy manner on almost every page. Looking through the Terms & Conditions of Service page, Lapsum lists a schedule for VPS availability with a possible refund of monthly charges. For instance, should service dip below 99.9% availability, a 5% refund is offered; as availability goes down the amount of the refund increases ending at 100% refund for less than 90% availability. Oddly, I didn’t see any availability schedule for web hosting or any other services.
Web hosting is the primary focus at Lapsum, several packages are available for the beginner with features and allowances increasing to meet the need of small to medium businesses. Domain transfer and creation services are part of the business, as is host reselling and creation of SSL certificates to help maintain customer integrity. VPS services are offered, with partnerships with Ubuntu, Suse, and Fedora Linux distributions. Over 140 free applications and tools are offered with VPS, hosting and reselling services such as WordPress, Joomla, Opencart, Magenta and many, many more. The company has won several awards from multiple organizations, including an “Excellent Service” rating from HostAdvice.com. As with many companies, a thirty day money-back guarantee is offered; but what isn’t seen very often is Lapsum’s no obligation 7 day free trial for VPS and 15 day free trial for web hosting.
The website doesn’t feature a support link that is very visible, the only support link I could find was in the footer of the pages that offered a link to open a ticket and an email address. The site lists the support hours are limited to 10:30-00:00 Monday-Friday. I was surprised that an organization of this size didn’t have 24/7 support, or an SLA (response time) published for service requests.
For the beginner or personal blogger, web hosting packages start at €.95 ($1.03 USD) per month, which includes 5 GB of web space, unlimited hosted domains, unlimited data transfer and email accounts. PHP, Ruby, and Python programming is supported; anti-spam and anti-virus protection is also included. Access logs and statistics are also included. These features are standard across all hosting plans. The next plan increases web space to 25 GB for €3.45 ($3.76 USD) and the top plan offers 50 GB of web space for €6.50 ($7.08 USD). Domain prices range from €9.95 to €14.95 ($10.84 to $16.29 USD) each for registration, transfer, and renewal. VPS plans come with a 99.9% uptime and run on Intel Xeon CPU’s operating at 2.4 Ghz and come with one IPv4 address and one IPv6 address and unlimited monthly traffic. The starter package comes with 60 GB of disk space, 1 GB of RAM for €6.95 per month; the intermediate package increases storage to 120 GB and RAM to 2GB at €12.95 ($14.11 USD) and the top-rated package retails for €17.95 ($19.56 USD). All prices include Spain’s Value-Added tax (VAT), this adds to their value proposition as most sites state make it clear the VAT is added on to the prices shown. Since Spain has a 21% VAT, this really makes the prices seem attractive!
Lapsum seems to be a solid company with the resources to provide customers with a wide selection of hardware and software services. While I was a little concerned about the lack of availability guarantees shown on other than the Terms of Service, this could very well be a cultural difference of which I’m unaware. Pros:
- Data Centers Owned by Lapsum
- Good Pricing
- Limited Support Hours
- Confusing Uptime Guarantee
